Get to know your clients, guys. It pays!
In the photo below you’ll see one very unhappy little 4-year-old boy. He was not in the mood for pictures that day. Despite his family’s awesome two week vacation on Maui, he was tired and grumpy. I felt bad for the Little Guy.
As I worked with him I kept reminding myself to respect his personal space and not make him feel pressured. With kids, one wrong move can shut them down to you completely!
I got him talking about what sorts of things he liked and we hit upon The LEGO Movie, of which I am also a huge fan. I started quoting some memorable lines and slowly drawing him out of his shell. I gave him a break and took some photos of the rest of the family, capturing some truly memorable shots of mother and daughter.
As adorable as these were, I knew that to please my clients I had to land some smiling shots of Little Guy. I suggested we change locations to maybe wake him up a little bit.
I wanted to get him moving around, so we kicked off our sandals and walked along the beach. I continued to ask him questions and eventually got a few laughs with, “Honey, where are my paaaaaants?!” (LEGO Movie humor.)
Anyway, after about 40 minutes, this shy handsome dude came to life! See the look on his face in the photo below!—I was doing my best Will Arnett LEGO Batman impression at the time.
It’s easy to get frustrated when we have an uncooperative client, but sometimes we need to come out from behind the lens and get to know them. It may take a little extra time and effort, but it’s so worth it! I mean, just look at that smile!
